Zhangjiakou
Zhangjiakou sits in northwestern Hebei where the North China Plain meets the Inner Mongolian steppe, historically a gateway trading city on the Great Wall. Its Dajingmen is one of the few named gates of the Great Wall and once anchored the tea-and-horse trade with Mongolia and Russia. In 2022 the city co-hosted the Beijing Winter Olympics, with snow events held at the Chongli ski resorts, now a leading winter-sports destination. The Bashang grasslands and the Ming-era Jimingyi post town draw summer visitors. A dedicated high-speed line reaches Beijing in under an hour. For an international student it combines frontier history with modern skiing culture.
