Hami

In Xinjiang province

Hami is the eastern gateway of Xinjiang, an oasis city on the Silk Road between the Gobi Desert and the Tianshan mountains. It gives its name to the famous sweet Hami melon, cultivated in its sun-baked fields for centuries. The city blends Uyghur and Han culture, seen in the tombs of the Hami kings and its old bazaars, while the nearby Barkol grassland offers cool alpine pasture. The climate is extremely dry with big seasonal contrasts. For an international student, Hami offers desert-and-mountain scenery and rich frontier culture.
