M

Business / Trade (M)

For commercial and trade activities in China — the visa most traders and buyers use.

Required documents
  • Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + a copy of the bio-data page
  • Completed COVA form (filled on visaforchina.cn, printed and signed)
  • One recent 33×48mm white-background color photo
  • Invitation letter from a Chinese trade partner / company / fair organizer stating the applicant's details, purpose and dates, places to visit, who pays, and the inviting company's name, address, phone & stamp
  • Proof of legal residence in the country of application if not a national
  • Previous Chinese passports/visas (or copies) if held
⚠️ The invitation from a Chinese company/partner is the decisive document — without it an M visa is usually refused. Often issued multiple-entry; stay per entry (30/60/90 days) is set by the consulate. Short-term M applicants are fingerprint-exempt until 31 Dec 2026.
L

Tourist (L)

For tourism or short private visits to China.

Required documents
  • Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + bio-page copy
  • Completed COVA form (printed and signed)
  • One 33×48mm white-background photo
  • Round-trip flight booking + hotel reservations for the whole stay, OR an invitation letter from an individual in China with their ID copy
  • Proof of sufficient funds (recent bank statement) may be required
⚠️ Issued single/double/multiple entry, stays commonly 30–90 days. Short-term L applicants are fingerprint-exempt until 31 Dec 2026.
Z

Work (Z)

For paid employment or long-term work in China.

Required documents
  • Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
  • COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
  • Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit (or the Work Permit) from the competent Chinese authority — original + copy
  • Employer's invitation/employment documents for some categories
⚠️ Usually single-entry; after arrival apply for a residence permit at the local PSB within 30 days. Z applicants still require fingerprints (not exempt).
X1

Student — long-term (X1)

For students admitted to study in China for more than 180 days.

Required documents
  • Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
  • COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
  • Admission Notice from the Chinese school — original + copy
  • 'Visa Application for Study in China' form (JW201 or JW202) — original + copy
⚠️ For study of ≤180 days use X2 instead. After entry apply for a residence permit within 30 days. X1 applicants require fingerprints.
Q1

Family reunion — long-term (Q1)

For family members of a Chinese citizen or permanent resident residing >180 days.

Required documents
  • Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
  • COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
  • Invitation letter from the Chinese citizen/permanent resident in China
  • Copy of the inviter's Chinese ID, or foreign passport + Chinese permanent residence permit
  • Proof of family relationship (marriage/birth certificate…) — original + copy
⚠️ For short visits (≤180 days) use Q2. After entry apply for a residence permit within 30 days. Q1 applicants require fingerprints.
Q2

Family visit — short-term (Q2)

For relatives of a Chinese citizen/permanent resident making a short visit (≤180 days).

Required documents
  • Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
  • COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
  • Invitation letter from the Chinese citizen/permanent resident
  • Copy of inviter's Chinese ID or foreign passport + Chinese permanent residence permit
  • Proof of the family relationship
⚠️ Single/double/multiple entry, stay up to 180 days per visit. Short-term Q2 applicants are fingerprint-exempt until 31 Dec 2026.
G

Transit (G)

For transiting through mainland China to a third country/region.

Required documents
  • Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
  • COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
  • A valid visa (if required) for the onward third country/region
  • A confirmed through ticket to the third country/region with fixed date and seat
⚠️ Many use China's visa-free transit (24-hour, or 240-hour/10-day at designated ports) instead of a G visa — but eligibility depends on route and port, so confirm first.
