Business / Trade (M)
For commercial and trade activities in China — the visa most traders and buyers use.
- Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + a copy of the bio-data page
- Completed COVA form (filled on visaforchina.cn, printed and signed)
- One recent 33×48mm white-background color photo
- Invitation letter from a Chinese trade partner / company / fair organizer stating the applicant's details, purpose and dates, places to visit, who pays, and the inviting company's name, address, phone & stamp
- Proof of legal residence in the country of application if not a national
- Previous Chinese passports/visas (or copies) if held
Tourist (L)
For tourism or short private visits to China.
- Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + bio-page copy
- Completed COVA form (printed and signed)
- One 33×48mm white-background photo
- Round-trip flight booking + hotel reservations for the whole stay, OR an invitation letter from an individual in China with their ID copy
- Proof of sufficient funds (recent bank statement) may be required
Work (Z)
For paid employment or long-term work in China.
- Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
- COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
- Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit (or the Work Permit) from the competent Chinese authority — original + copy
- Employer's invitation/employment documents for some categories
Student — long-term (X1)
For students admitted to study in China for more than 180 days.
- Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
- COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
- Admission Notice from the Chinese school — original + copy
- 'Visa Application for Study in China' form (JW201 or JW202) — original + copy
Family reunion — long-term (Q1)
For family members of a Chinese citizen or permanent resident residing >180 days.
- Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
- COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
- Invitation letter from the Chinese citizen/permanent resident in China
- Copy of the inviter's Chinese ID, or foreign passport + Chinese permanent residence permit
- Proof of family relationship (marriage/birth certificate…) — original + copy
Family visit — short-term (Q2)
For relatives of a Chinese citizen/permanent resident making a short visit (≤180 days).
- Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
- COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
- Invitation letter from the Chinese citizen/permanent resident
- Copy of inviter's Chinese ID or foreign passport + Chinese permanent residence permit
- Proof of the family relationship
Transit (G)
For transiting through mainland China to a third country/region.
- Original passport valid ≥6 months with 2 blank pages + copy
- COVA form and one 33×48mm photo
- A valid visa (if required) for the onward third country/region
- A confirmed through ticket to the third country/region with fixed date and seat
