Qinghai Minzu University, founded in 1949, is the oldest university in Qinghai province and the first ethnic-minorities university established in northwest China. Located in the highland capital Xining on the Tibetan Plateau, it serves the Tibetan, Hui, Mongol, Salar and Han peoples of the region and is a leading centre for ethnic studies, Tibetan studies, Tibetan and Mongolian languages, law and economics. It plays a central role in educating cadres and professionals for the plateau and for cross-cultural understanding. Its campus in Xining sits at a historic crossroads of Silk Road cultures.
