📖 About the university
Xiangtan Institute of Technology is a private, non-profit university in Xiangtan, Hunan province, founded in 2001 as the Beijin College of Hunan University of Technology and Business on the banks of the Xiang River, on the historic site of the Han-dynasty Beijin City; in 2018 Hunan University of Technology and Business partnered with the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group to jointly run the college, a new campus in Xiangtan opened in 2019, and in June 2020 the Ministry of Education approved its conversion into an independent, non-profit private university under its present name, making it the first independent college in Hunan province to complete this transition. The university offers 38 undergraduate majors across seven disciplines, including science, engineering, economics, management, law, literature and art, delivered through schools such as the School of Humanities and Arts, School of Business, School of Chinese Languages, School of Digital Technology, School of Automotive Engineering and School of Marxism, alongside Tanzhou College. Reflecting its Geely-group backing, the university hosts a joint postdoctoral research station under China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, giving postdoctoral researchers and students the opportunity to collaborate directly with the automotive conglomerate. As a private university it is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, but its Geely affiliation gives it distinctive industry links within the automotive-engineering field.
The university's campus sits in the Jiuhua Economic and Technological Development Zone of Xiangtan, at the centre of the Chang-Zhu-Tan urban cluster's science-and-innovation corridor along the western bank of the Xiang River, and covers about 1,200 mu; it currently enrolls roughly 10,000 students. Its rapid transformation from a satellite college of a larger public university into an independent, industry-backed private institution in under two decades illustrates the pace of change in China's applied higher-education sector. At present the university enrolls primarily domestic students and does not advertise a dedicated Chinese-language programme for international applicants. Its blend of a young private-university identity with substantial corporate backing from one of China's largest automotive groups gives it a distinctive position among Hunan's growing number of private undergraduate institutions.
