North Minzu University in Yinchuan, founded in 1984, is a national ethnic-minorities university directly under the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, serving students from across China's many ethnic groups. Unusually for a minzu university, it emphasises engineering and applied sciences — materials, mechatronics, computing and chemistry — alongside economics, ethnic studies, languages and art. It brings together students of dozens of nationalities in the Muslim-majority Ningxia region on the Yellow River. Its modern campus in Yinchuan fosters exchange among China's ethnic cultures. The university welcomes international students, including many from Muslim and Central Asian countries.
