📖 About the university

Xinjiang Hotan University is a public undergraduate university in Hotan, the oasis city on the southern rim of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang. It was approved by the Ministry of Education in May 2024 and formally unveiled in November 2024, created by merging Hotan Teachers College with Xinjiang Uyghur Medical College, and is the first full undergraduate university established in the Hotan prefecture. Its first six undergraduate programmes are ideological and political education, preschool education, primary education, computer science and technology, data science and big data technology, and medical laboratory technology. The disciplinary map covers nine broad categories including law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and the arts, with education, engineering and medicine designated as the core fields. The campus occupies 2,468 mu, about 165 hectares, and is planned for an eventual enrolment of 22,000 students, a very large footprint reflecting its role in a region where higher education has historically been thin. Its incorporation of the former Uyghur Medical College also makes it one of very few institutions in China teaching traditional Uyghur medicine at degree level, and Hotan itself is an overwhelmingly Muslim city where halal food is the norm rather than an accommodation.
