📖 About the university

Fuzhou Polytechnic is a public university run by the Fuzhou municipal government, formed in September 2002 through the merger of three long-standing adult and continuing-education schools: Fuzhou Amateur University, founded in 1958, Fuzhou Workers' Amateur University, founded in 1959, and the Fuzhou branch of Fujian Radio and Television University, founded in 1979; the Fuzhou Commercial School was subsequently incorporated in 2004. In 2012 the institution was named among Fujian province's first group of demonstrative higher vocational colleges, in 2015 it was recognised nationally as a model institution for graduate employment, and in 2019 it was selected for China's high-level "Double High Plan" vocational schools programme. In May 2026 the Ministry of Education approved its upgrade to full vocational-bachelor's status under its present English name, Fuzhou Polytechnic, simultaneously dissolving the former vocational-college structure. The university is located in Fuzhou University Town in Minhou county and shares administration with Fuzhou Open University, and as of early 2023 it employed 585 staff and taught more than 11,000 full-time higher-vocational students alongside over 14,000 adult-education students across nine constituent schools and 45 majors, spanning business management, mechanical and electrical engineering, information engineering, art and design, and tourism and hospitality.

It is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, functioning instead as a large, applied vocational-bachelor's university serving Fuzhou and the wider Fujian region. As a municipally run institution with deep roots in adult and continuing education dating to the late 1950s, it has historically played an important role in workforce training for Fuzhou's local economy, alongside its more recent role in full-time vocational-bachelor's education. At present it enrolls primarily domestic Chinese students and does not advertise a dedicated Chinese-language pathway for international applicants. Its long institutional history combined with its recent transition to a full public vocational-bachelor's university illustrates the broader modernisation taking place across China's municipally run higher-vocational institutions.
