📖 About the university

Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute is a full-time public higher-vocational college located in Suzhou, Jiangsu, and is recognised as the first art-and-design higher-vocational institution in China. It was established in 1999 with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the Jiangsu provincial government, growing out of the Suzhou Arts and Crafts Specialised School founded in 1958, whose lineage traces further back to the Suzhou Art School (1922) and Suzhou Art Specialised School (1932) founded by the painter Yan Wenliang. The institute is organised into six departments, namely Environmental Art Design, Industrial Design, Decorative Arts, Visual Communication Design, Fashion Design and Digital Art, together with departments of social sciences, foreign languages and physical education. Occupying a campus of around 600 mu with more than five thousand students, it is a national high-level (double-high) vocational college and a leading centre for training designers and craftspeople, drawing on Suzhou's rich traditions in silk, embroidery and decorative arts. It maintains strengths in environmental art, visual communication, fashion and industrial design. As an applied vocational college it enrols primarily domestic students and does not currently advertise a dedicated Chinese-language pathway for international applicants.
