📖 About the university

Westlake University, formally established in February 2018, is China's first private, non-profit research-oriented university, based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. It grew out of the Westlake Institute for Advanced Study, proposed in 2016 by seven leading scientists, and is led by the renowned biophysicist Shi Yigong, with Nobel laureate Chen-Ning Yang as honorary chair. The university deliberately stays small and elite, concentrating on doctoral and a select undergraduate cohort across the Schools of Science, Life Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. It recruits world-class faculty globally, teaches and researches largely in English, and aims to rival the best international research universities in scientific discovery. Backed by both government support and private philanthropy, Westlake has quickly become a symbol of China's ambition to build a new model of higher education.
