🌆 About Karamay

Karamay is a prefecture-level city in the north of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, whose name means "black oil" in Uyghur, reflecting its origins as one of China's first great oilfields. Developed from the desert in the 1950s, it is a modern, planned petroleum city of around half a million people, orderly and prosperous, with the Karamay River running through green landscaped districts. The climate is harshly continental, with very hot, dry summers and long, cold winters, set against the surrounding Gurbantunggut Desert and dramatic wind-eroded Yardang landforms nearby. Cleaner and wealthier than many regional cities, it offers modern amenities, distinctive Uyghur and Central Asian food, and a safe, quiet environment. It is linked by air and rail to the regional capital Urumqi, making it accessible despite its remote setting.
