📖 About the university

Jilin Animation Institute is a private arts university in the high-tech development zone of Changchun and was the first higher-education institution in China created specifically to train talent for animation, comics and games, which earned it the nickname cradle of China's animation and game professionals. It was founded in June 2000 as the Animation College of Jilin University of Arts, an independent college backed by the Jilin Education Industry Group, and in 2008 the Ministry of Education approved its transition into a free-standing private undergraduate institution. The institute teaches more than 13,000 undergraduates across a Changchun campus and a second campus in Shuangyang, and it is organised into fifteen teaching units, among them the schools of animation art, comics, games, design and products, film, and virtual reality and film technology, the business school of cultural industries and a school of international exchange. Its distinctive feature is a production-led model of teaching in which students work inside the Jilin original animation, comics and games industry park attached to the campus, so coursework runs through real studio projects. The institute holds several national designations, as a national animation teaching and research base, a national cultural industry demonstration base, and a national animation industry base developed with the Changchun Film Group and the Jilin Publishing Group. Its programmes cover animation and comics, game design, digital media and film and television production as well as design and cultural-industry management, so the curriculum deliberately spans art, technology and business. For an international student drawn to animation, games or digital media rather than a traditional academic subject, the school of international exchange is the point of contact, and Changchun offers a calmer and cheaper base than China's largest cities.

Changchun is the capital of Jilin province in China's northeast and a historic center of the country's automobile and film industries. Its metropolitan population is around nine million, and the city is known for wide, tree-lined boulevards and a planned, green layout. The climate is markedly seasonal, with short, warm summers and long, very cold, snowy winters that regularly fall well below freezing.
