📜 About & history
Xipiqu Mosque, originally called Xibeiyu Mosque, lies north of the Lord Bao Memorial Temple in Kaifeng, Henan, behind the Baogongci Market. Its west-facing gate is guarded by a pair of stone lions, and the east-facing prayer hall survives with three bays, alongside two ablution rooms, two rooms for the imam and one room used by the residents' committee. Founded no later than the Ming dynasty, as the Ming text Rumeng Lu records, it was one of the four great mosques of Ming Kaifeng, with Fenghuang Mosque and Dongda Mosque. Yellow River floods in the Ming and Qing forced several relocations; Qing-era remains lie outside the west wall of the No. 1 Prison, and a 1923 stele in the mosque records compensation for land taken to expand the prison. Worship stopped during the Cultural Revolution, and the mosque was rebuilt and reopened in 1980. In the Republican era about 200 Muslim households lived nearby, working in farming, salt, catering and transport.
