Xinyang's historic mosque stands within the 'Laocheng' (Old City) quarter of Shihe District, one of several Ming-dynasty-era structures in that quarter alongside the old Ming city wall, the Confucian Temple's Dacheng Hall, and the Southern Song-era Zhunti Nunnery. Its presence within this historic urban fabric reflects a long-established Muslim community in Xinyang, a city on the upper reaches of the Huai River in southern Henan.
