Tuyoq (Tuyugou) Mazar Mosque

吐峪沟麻扎清真寺
📍 Turpan · Tuyugou Township, Shanshan County

📜 About & history

The Tuyoq Mazar Mosque sits at the heart of Tuyoq, an ancient Uyghur oasis village set in a green valley cutting through the Flaming Mountains east of Turpan. The village is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Xinjiang's Muslims, associated with a mazar (saint's shrine) so venerated that local tradition holds a pilgrimage here should precede the Hajj, earning Tuyoq the nickname 'China's Mecca'. The mosque is distinguished by four tall green minarets that rise above the mud-brick houses and can be seen from almost anywhere in the village. It remains an active place of worship at the centre of village life.
