Songjiang Mosque (Zhenjiao Temple)

松江清真寺(松江真教寺)
📍 Shanghai · Songjiang District 🏛️ Yuan dynasty, c. 1341–1367

📜 About & history

Songjiang Mosque, also called Zhenjiao Temple or Yunjian Baihe Temple, is the oldest mosque in Shanghai and one of the oldest in the lower Yangtze region. It was founded in the Yuan dynasty (around 1341–1367) by a Muslim official (darughachi), after Central Asian Muslim troops settled in Huating (present-day Songjiang) following the Mongol campaigns of the 1270s. Its brick 'kiln hall' (yaodian) prayer chamber, built in Arab style with a domed interior and a cross-ridged double-eaves roof, is the earliest surviving Islamic structure in the Shanghai area. It was designated a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 1980.
