Zhenjiang traces Islamic worship to a mosque first recorded in the second year of the Tang Zhenguan era (628), among the earliest in Jiangsu. The Shanxiang mosque, tucked in the lanes off Daxi Road near Qingzhensi Street, is the longest-surviving mosque on its original site in the province. Rebuilt during the Qing Kangxi reign, it is listed as a Jiangsu provincial cultural relic protection unit. It remains the main functioning mosque in the old city center.
