Shantou Mosque traces its origins to the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty, when Arab merchants established a simple mosque in the old city area to meet the religious needs of the local Muslim community. After repeated repairs and expansions over the centuries, it has become the spiritual center of Islamic culture for the wider Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong, its architecture blending Arabic and traditional Chinese elements.
