The Shaanxi Grand Mosque was founded in 1883 in the Nanguan (south gate) quarter of old Dihua, today's Urumqi, by Hui Muslims of Shaanxi origin. As the Shaanxi Hui community grew it was rebuilt and enlarged between 1906 and 1911, becoming the largest mosque in the city at the time. Built in traditional Chinese palace style rather than Central Asian form, it was repaired in the 1950s and thoroughly restored in 1984. In 2013 China's State Council listed it as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Located in the dense Tianshan District old quarter near Heping South Road; multiple city bus routes serve the area — confirm route numbers locally.
From the city centre head into the Heping South Road / old bazaar quarter of Tianshan District; the mosque sits in the lanes off Heping South Road.
In central Tianshan District, a short taxi ride south of People's Square and the main downtown.
