The Pingliang North Great Mosque is one of the most influential mosques in eastern Gansu (the Longdong region) and a renowned centre of the Shaanxi school of Chinese Islam. It was built before 1917 on the initiative of local residents Yu Gong and Ma Jinchang and was enlarged several times; the original complex had a 12-bay hall with a 9-bay veranda plus a lecture hall, bathhouse, minaret tower, side rooms and a forest of steles. Many eminent Islamic scholars, including Su Taiping, Lan Xiuzhai, Wang Shanming and An Xiuji, served as imams here. It has been recognised as one of China's hundred model mosques.

Five daily prayers are observed; the Friday Jumuah prayer at midday is the main weekly gathering.

🚇 How to reach the mosque
The mosque sits in the Hui quarter of central Kongtong District off Xilan Middle Road; local buses run along the main road and a taxi from Pingliang centre is quick.
A large, active congregational mosque in a Hui neighbourhood with plenty of halal (清真) eateries; dress modestly.
From central Pingliang follow Xilan Middle Road to Beidasi East Lane and turn into Beisi Lane; a short taxi or bus ride from the centre.
