For much of its modern history Wenzhou had no dedicated mosque, despite a growing Hui and migrant Muslim population drawn by the city's commerce. A mosque was inaugurated on 12 January 2011, ending the city's long absence of a place of Islamic worship. It sits in the old-town lanes of Lucheng District off the Xinhe Street area. It serves local Hui Muslims as well as Muslim traders and students in the city.
