The Northern Mosque anchors the northern end of Jinan's Yongchang Street Muslim quarter, complementing the Great Southern Mosque at the other end. It was first built in the Ming Hongzhi period (1488-1505) and expanded through the Qing dynasty under the Kangxi, Jiaqing, Daoguang and Guangxu reigns and into the early Republic, giving it over 400 years of history. Oriented west-facing-east, it comprises two courtyards along a central axis with a spirit wall, gates, main hall and a moon-viewing tower. Its main prayer hall rests on some forty wooden pillars and can hold close to a thousand worshippers.

Five daily prayers are held; the large main hall fills for the Friday noon congregational prayer and on the two Eid festivals.

Within the same halal food quarter as the Great Southern Mosque; the two are easily visited together. Muslim travelers are warmly received.
