The East Mosque grew out of a Quranic primary school known locally as the 'East School' (Dongxue) that was originally administered by the Great Mosque. During the Tongzhi reign, Hui migrants fleeing the northwest built a mosque at nearby Suletu village. In the Guangxu era the East School and the village mosque merged to form the present mosque, which then separated from the Great Mosque as its own congregation (fang). It occupies a site of roughly ten mu in the old town.

Five daily prayers and Friday Jumu'ah at midday are held; Taraweeh during Ramadan. Follow the mosque's posted timetable.
