The Gulou South Street Mosque is the oldest mosque in Chengdu, founded in 1372 in the early Ming dynasty with its main structure completed in 1375. It served as a principal centre for the city's Hui Muslim community through the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its prayer hall was listed as a Chengdu municipal cultural relic protection unit in April 1981, and in March 1991 the Sichuan provincial government raised it to a provincial-level protected site. It remains an active congregational mosque in the heart of the old city.
