Wuzhishan

Wuzhishan is a small mountain city in south-central Hainan, named after the jagged Wuzhi (Five Finger) Mountain, the island's highest peak, and it once served as the capital of the former Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. With no coastline and the highest forest cover of any city in Hainan, its economy depends on tropical agriculture, especially Shuiman hand-made green tea grown only on the surrounding mist-covered slopes, along with rubber, tropical fruit and a modest eco-tourism trade centered on rainforest hiking. The city has no major university, functioning mainly as an administrative and cultural center, but it hosts a branch of the Hainan Ethnographic Museum documenting Li and Miao heritage. Wuzhishan is best known as the spiritual homeland of Hainan's Li ethnic minority, whose traditional songs, dances, brocade weaving and thatched 'boat-shaped houses' are showcased around the city, and as a cool mountain retreat from the tropical heat of Hainan's coastal resorts.
