Songyuan

In Jilin province

Songyuan spreads across the Songnen Plain of western Jilin, where the Songhua River meets Mongolian grasslands and oilfields. Its centerpiece is Chagan Lake, famous for a centuries-old winter fishing ritual in which fishermen haul huge nets under thick ice. The area blends Han and Mongol traditions and is a major petroleum and grain producer. Winters are long and bitterly cold. For an international student, Songyuan offers unique ice-fishing culture and vast northern landscapes.
