Putian is a coastal city in eastern Fujian, best known as the birthplace of Mazu, the sea goddess, whose ancestral temple stands on nearby Meizhou Island and draws pilgrims from across the Chinese world. It has a warm subtropical monsoon climate. High-speed rail connects it to Fuzhou and Xiamen, and it is served by Fuzhou's airport.
