Panzhihua is a planned steel city in the far south of Sichuan, wedged in a dry-hot valley where the Jinsha and Yalong rivers meet. Founded in the 1960s to exploit rich iron and vanadium-titanium ores, it enjoys warm, sunny weather all year and has reinvented itself as a winter sunshine and health-retreat destination.
