Kangding is the capital of the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan, a historic trade town where the Han Chinese lowlands meet the Tibetan plateau at about 2,500 metres altitude. Long a hub on the Tea Horse Road, it is immortalised in the beloved folk song 'Kangding Love Song'. Snow peaks, the alpine Mugecuo Lake and the Tagong grassland surround it, and Tibetan Buddhist culture pervades daily life. For an international student, Kangding offers dramatic mountain scenery, living Tibetan culture and a gateway to western Sichuan (be mindful of altitude).
