Huanggang

In Hubei province

Huanggang is a prefecture on the north bank of the Yangtze in eastern Hubei, a region steeped in culture and history. The Song-dynasty poet Su Dongpo wrote his celebrated Red Cliff odes here during exile, and the site is a literary landmark. Qichun county was the home of Ming physician Li Shizhen, author of the great pharmacopoeia Bencao Gangmu. Huanggang is also nationally famous for its rigorous high schools and gaokao exam preparation. The area produces chestnuts, tea and freshwater fish.
