China's first large-scale kite museum and the largest of its kind in the world, construction began in July 1987 and it officially opened in April 1989 in Weifang, long known as the 'World Kite Capital'. The museum displays hundreds of traditional and contemporary kites from China and abroad alongside the history of the region's centuries-old kite-making craft, and has been managed by the municipal tourism bureau since 2003. Weifang has hosted the International Kite Festival annually since 1984, and the museum is closely tied to this living cultural tradition.
