The surviving stone facade of the Church of Mater Dei, built by the Jesuits beside St. Paul's College, which was founded in 1594 as the first Western-style university in the Far East. A fire in 1835 destroyed the church and college, leaving only the facade and the grand stone staircase, which became Macau's best-known landmark and visual symbol. The carvings blend European Baroque with Chinese and Japanese motifs, and the site forms part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Behind the facade are the Museum of Sacred Art and the Crypt, which holds relics of Japanese and Vietnamese martyrs.
