A broad barrier lake created thousands of years ago when lava flows dammed a river valley, in Ning'an west of Mudanjiang. The Diaoshuilou Waterfall drops at its outlet, and the lake is one of north-east China's best-known summer escapes.

Coaches run from the square in front of Mudanjiang railway station to the main scenic area, about two hours and around 25 yuan one way, usually out in the morning and back in the afternoon.
