Gahai Lake lies on the Gahai grassland about 50 kilometres south of the Luqu county town, at 3,400 metres above sea level, and in the wet season covers more than 10,000 mu. It is the largest freshwater lake in Gannan and is called "Tso Nying" in Tibetan. Raised to national nature reserve status in 1998, it is the core of the Gansu Gahai-Zecha National Nature Reserve. An important wetland of the north-eastern Tibetan Plateau, it hosts 80 species of migratory birds such as black-necked cranes and black storks and is a stopover for migrating birds from March to November each year.
